Peckham Lido
Reviving one of London’s forgotten community hubs for our generation
About
Once a well-loved 50 metre outdoor swimming pool, Peckham Lido served swimmers and sun-bathers of South East London for over 60 years. By 1987 it had fallen into disrepair and was closed and filled in. All that remains visible is a crumbling blue fountain.
With many of Britain’s lidos coming back to life, the Peckham Lido campaign has been set up to resurrect the South East London lido.

What we're up to
The Peckham Lido campaign is working with Studio Octopi, landscape architects, planning and business consultants to formally submit for Pre-Application Planning Advice to Southwark Council.
Public consultations are being held with the community in order to take on board ideas from locals who will then feed into the architect’s designs.

Where is the Lido situated?
The lido is situated at the top of Peckham Rye Common between Peckham Rye and East Dulwich Road.

Are you working with Southwark Council and Mayor of London?
Yes, both Southwark Council and the Mayor of London have invested in the initial idea of the Lido and are committed to working with the Lido team to explore the feasibility of the Lido.

Will the Lido be a private business?
No, the Lido has been set up as a Community Interest Company, which means that it has directors, but profits are put back into the company.

How are you planning to preserve the existing trees?
We have instructed our architects to incorporate all the mature trees that currently stand on the site so that the Lido feels like it is part of the park, both inside and out.

Who will own the land the Lido sits on?
The land is currently designated as Metropolitan Open Land which is owned by Southwark Council. If planning is granted it likely that a trust would lease the land from the council; it would never be owned by the community interest company that ran the Lido.

When will the Lido likely be built?
We are hoping to have people splashing around in three years.

What about parking?
Parking is something that people on the surrounding streets care about deeply and we will have a careful plan about minimising the impact on local residents. As the Lido is situated in a very built up area we would encourage users to walk or cycle. We certainly don’t plan on putting a car park on the site, but we are planning lots of cycle parking.

Who are the Architects you are working with?
We are working with Studio Octopi, a practise based in South London who have a deep passion for outdoor swimming and lidos. Studio Octopi are also the instigators of the Thames Baths project.

What are the benefits for Peckham?
The Lido would bring an Olympic sized pool for local schools. It’s a healthy recreational facility for Peckham’s diverse community, serving all ages and cultures. It will bring health and wellbeing to the heart of the community and will create full and part time jobs that would suit a range of skill sets and qualifications, including life guards, personal trainers, yoga teachers, admin staff and more. Local shops, suppliers, restaurants and bars in Peckham, Nunhead and East Dulwich will benefit from the investment.
